Smithfield Irrigation Company was founded in 1915 by the merger of Smithfield Irrigation District and the Brickyard System. These two systems were founded in the 1880s.
This is a non-profit irrigation company governed by an elected board of directors and owned by its shareholders.
Smithfield Irrigation company is not affiliated with Smithfield City Corp.
Originally a complex system of gravity flow canals, diversions and ditches provide water from the canyons to the residents of Smithfield and the surrounding farms.
Secondary irrigation water utilizing the above mentioned sources and several large wells is now provided to approximately 1000 users in the greater Smithfield area by means of an underground pressurized system.
